Eponymous label, Yohji Yamamoto joins forces once again with New Era for a new mini collection. Extending its successful collaboration with the American headwear brand earlier in the year – the “Block Typeface” series sees a continuation of New Era’s sleek black and white aesthetic.
This collaboration is a familiar pairing. The first dates back to February for part 1 of the SS22 collection – “Vertical series”. The latest June collaboration marks the second drop, with the “Block Typeface series”.
This drop is part of the collaboration which features the signature logos. “Yohji Yamamoto” and the “art motif” from the “Yohji Yamamoto POUR HOMME” archive collection.
A Modest Design
The series includes a minimalist T-shirt and cap; functioning as a reflection of both brand’s essence. Centrality is found in the simple “YOHJI” motif which appears in white against a characteristically black t-shirt – stitched on the side of a 9THIRTY cap.
The new block font channels refreshing simplicity and modesty, reminiscent of wabi-sabi (侘寂) – “rustic simplicity”. The concepts epitomise the essence of Japanese aesthetics which inform the construction of clothing. The spirit of wabi-sabi clearly manifests in Yamamoto’s work as he says,
I have no desire to make the perfect garment. If one seeks perfection, one should enter the world of Haute Couture. The real thrill lies rather pursuing the art of wabi-sabi, the attempt to grab the tale of a slippery living, that brings a serene melancholy.”
The t-shirt – a S/S Cotton Tee, is the basic edition of the short-sleeve T-shirt that is also 100% cotton.
The second offering from the SS22 series – the 9THIRTY cap is also 100% cotton. “The curved visor cap on the headwear uses cotton twill materials”. These intricate details inform the series and are synonymous with the pre-existing collections born from partnership.
The collection finishes off with the New Era emblem decorating the shirt’s left cuff.
Both t-shirt and headwear encompass a street style aesthetic – proving to be a versatile and gender-neutral collection appropriate for any style enthusiast.
The collection is available on June 10 here – the official e-commerce site of Yohji Yammamoto and at select stores. The prices range from $176 to $216 and sizes range from S to XXL. These pieces are sure to become a wardrobe essential.
