Here’s an exciting new date to add to the fashion calendar: Costa Rica Fashion Week. (CRFW) returns in 2022 and this year, FIB is broadcasting the week’s events straight from Costa Rica to you.
Costa Rica Fashion Week (CRFW) is the longest-running fashion event in Costa Rica’s history – and continues to reinvent itself each year. Located in San José, Costa Rica, it runs from 29th September to 1st October, 2022. This year, the event hopes to springboard the area’s creatives; and Fashion Industry Broadcast will be on the ground, checking out the best Latin American talent.
A Place to Collaborate
Each year, CRFW offers up a variety of physical catwalk shows and digital options if you’re watching from home. Over seventeen thousand people followed the event through YouTube for the 20th edition of CRFW in 2021; which took over Antigua Aduana, San Jose, Costa Rica for the weekend.
CRFW is the region’s most high-profile appointment with fashion, acting as a strategic point of access for the area’s creatives. This is the place where South, Central and North America converge and collaborate with the clothing industries most easily. Karina Díaz, designer and director of the event says,
“The idea is that the event is a platform for designers to make themselves known not only locally, but internationally”
In 2021, the catwalk’s emphasis was on inclusivity and sustainability. Díaz tells Fashion United, “I am aware of the change that must be made in Costa Rican fashion in order to enhance talent and position ourselves internationally.”
Improving Visibility
February saw the initiation of Costa Rica Fashion Week’s Resort edition. Andaz Costa Rica Resort at Peninsula Papagayo became the temporary home for summer and resort designers to present their work, making their work visible to the public for the first time.
The first edition under this modality included six national designers: Sastrería Triana, Blanco Blanco, Nerea, Mar de Urano, Morena Swimwear, Medusa and a collaboration between the brands Mari Nava and Del Manzano. Mexican designer German Ruíz presented with Okoxal accessories, as well as the Colombians Curuba and Daniela Battle.
CRFW has a strong educational focus via collaboration with the Istituto Marangoni, the Latin American Fashion Summit (LAFS), and the National Learning Institute (INA). The objective, is for Costa Rican designers to learn from the processes that are carried out in other countries to further develop their brands. Diaz explains that the event aims to “build a solid industry that generates employment, income, and exports for the country. That is why, together with my team, we seek to make national talent visible on digital platforms, accompanying designers with the best experts from the Latin American region”.
