From September 9-14, iconic fashion labels including Moschino, Michael Kors and Carolina Herrera will once again grace the New York runways with nuance and style. New-generation designers like Batsheva, LaQuan Smith, and Willy Chavarria, among others, aim to go above and beyond for this year’s Spring/Summer shows.

THE COUNTDOWN IS ON

The countdown is on! It’s exactly 3 days until the silky gowns of Caroline Herrerra; the sleek suits of Sergio Hudson, fill our minds with the fantasy city that is New York. Of equal excitement are the collections from the 2021 CFDA/Vogue Fashion Fund Finalists, as CFDA CEO Steven Kolb told Vogue “whose diverse voices and creativity will positively add to the week’s energy.” The seven finalists-  Fe Noel, Sukeina, Elena Velez, Judy Turner, Wiederhoeft, Black Boy Knits, and No Sesso– have the second slot of the week, right after the opening show from Proenza Shouler.

ANNIVERSARY CELEBRATIONS

Speaking of the opener of NYFW, Proenza Shouler is celebrating the 20th anniversary for the brand. Beginning the season has solidified their spot as NYFW royalty, and the 20th anniversary celebration is just the icing on the cake for creative directors Lazaro Hernandez and Jack McCollough.

And an even bigger anniversary? The CFDA is celebrating their 60th year! As Steven Kolb reflects on the CFDA Instagram, “we are incredibly proud to release a lineup that reflects our founding principle: to promote American fashion on a global scale.” For their anniversary celebrations, the CFDA hopes to honor the ‘collective excellence, diversity and resilience’ that is so prolific within the fashion industry.

EUROPEAN INVASION

The Europeans have invaded NYFW, with Milanese fashion epoch Marni and Fendi moving their shows to New York for their Spring/Summer collections. Marni has said it is kicking off a world tour of sorts, with the aim to establish a better relationship with its international audiences.

World-renowned Fendi is also making the big move to New York, with the 25th anniversary of the Fendi Baguette Bag at the centrepiece of their collection. On the evening of September 9, Fendi is holding its special show, as the fashion house announced on their Instagram. Even London-based COS is making the switch to the Big Apple!

RETURNING TO THE RUNWAY

Nestled in the debuts and fashion week favourites are a number of brand comebacks that have to be acknowledged. PUMA is returning after 5 years off the seasonal runway. 2017’s Fenty x PUMA is the last we’ve heard from the cult athletic label. The September 13 PUMA Futrograde is going to be a blast. Tommy Hilfiger and AREA, among others, are also returning, with Hilfiger opting for a digital experience over an in-person runway.

Finally, of course, NYFW is nothing without Tom Ford, who is standing by tradition and closing out the week. NYFW Spring/Summer 2023 has a lot to offer, so get excited for a week to remember.
