James Cameron confirms three more sequels after ‘Avatar 2’ earns 2 billion.
Avatar: The Way of Water has blown box office expectations out of the water, paving the way for three more Avatar movies.
James Cameron has confirmed that he will continue the “Avatar” franchise after the success of his most recent film. Five weeks after making its debut, Avatar: The Way of Water has grossed $2.027 billion worldwide, currently making it the sixth-highest-grossing film of all time and the highest-grossing film of 2022, pulling the rug out from underneath Top Gun: Maverick, which grossed $1.489 billion.
Avatar: The Way of Water got off to a slow start, earning only $53 million on its opening day. Initial estimates expected the film to garner $150 to $170 million. However, by the third week of release, it had earned over $1.61 billion. It reached $598 million globally and raised $1.42 billion internationally. The film also performed well in China, France, Germany and the United Kingdom.
It received nominations for Best Director and Best Motion Picture – Drama at the 80th Golden Globes Awards and four nominations at the 95th Academy awards, including Best Picture.
Fun fact: this is not Cameron’s only film to have reached over 2 billion dollars. In fact, this is the third time one of his movies have managed to reach the top ten highest grossing films of all time. The other two films are Avatar and Titanic.
Considering The Way of Water’s budget of $400 million, Cameron understandably had a very high bar to pass. It looks like fans will have their wish granted for more exploration into the visually breathtaking world of Pandora.
