The announcement was made via Netflix’s Twitter, offering a green light for fans to begin the hype for what the new season has in store. The mastermind behind the series, director Hwang Dong-Hyuk, tells Vanity Fair that “Humanity is going to be put to a test through those games once again”.

Following the many character deaths from season one, a new roster of characters is already in line for season 2. Gi-hun (Lee Jung-Jae), the main character that started it all remains in the lead role. Accompanying him are familiar faces, Lee Byung-hun, Wi Ha-jun, and Gong Yoo.

According to Prestige, the show sees some fresh actors like Si-wan, Kang Ha-Neul, Park Sung-hoon, and Yang Dong-geun. For fans of K-Pop, former member of girl group IZ*ONE, Jo Yu-ri, as well as Choi Seung-hyun, former member of boy group BigBang are joining the cast. Let’s hope these characters don’t betray our trust!

The ending of season one left fans of the series theorising what’s next for their favourite characters.

When speaking to The Hollywood Reporter, director, Hwang Dong-Hyuk, notes that he has seen the fan theories. However has chosen to turn away from them. Hwang further discusses that season two directly follows the events from season one’s last scene.

“Instead of trying to meet the expectations of viewers, I just thought about the last moment when Gi-hun turned away from boarding the plane, and I thought about what he will do next…

“I can’t share any details yet, but you know that Seong Gi-hun has become a totally new person by the end of season one, so season two is going to be about what the new Gi-hun is going to do and how things will unfold with this new kind of character,” he says.

As he crafts the second season, Hwang tells AP Entertainment , “There’s been so much pressure, so much demand, and so much love for the second season, so I almost feel like you leave us with no choice… It’s in my head right now, I’m planning the process currently,” he explains.

New episodes likely to be released by 2023-2024. Our verdict? Squid Game is definitely ready to receive another wave of success and adoration.
