It’s Day 34 and Roberts is exploring the attractions of Mumbai.
This was my first visit to Mumbai. But I had read about it in the amazing book Shantaram, by fellow Australian Gregory David Roberts. Who could probably also be related.
Shantaram is a 2003 novel, in which a convicted Australian bank robber and heroin addict escapes from Melbourne’s Pentridge Prison and flees to India. The novel is commended by many for its vivid portrayal of life in Bombay in the early to late 1980s.
It was one of the most memorable books I have ever read and through it one gets to live vicariously through many rich and harrowing experiences, including the seedy cafe ‘Leopold’s’, slum life in Bombay, the world of international criminals and Indian prison. It was in development for many years as a feature film when Johnny Depp bought the rights to the Script. That fizzled out but it has now been brought to the small screen as a series starring Charlie Hunnam as protagonist Lin. Mumbai is a bustling metropolis located on the western coast of India. It is known for its vibrant culture, stunning architecture, delicious food, and rich history.
