Every November Australian radio station Triple J dedicate a month to celebrate Australian music. They announce the nominations for Australian album of the year as well as featuring all Australian artists and covering stories on Australian musicians. Their Like A Version segment gets the aussie treatment too, and not one week into the month, this tradition delivered something special when Tuka teamed up with the soulful Thelma Plum and The Kite String Tangle to cover, and put a new twist on ‘Big Jet Plane’ by Angus and Julia Stone.
Tuka is a solo artist in his own right but is also known as a member of Thundamentals, a hip hop group formed in the Blue Mountains of New South Wales.
Thelma Plum is a wonderful indigenous singer/songwriter also from New South Wales but is now based in Melbourne. She has always received rotation on Triple J and has two albums to her name since graduating from Brisbane’s Music Industry College.
The Kite String Tangle is the solo project of Brisbane artist Danny Harley, who often collaborates with other artists as well as members of his family. He’s performed at high profile festivals such as Falls and Groovin’ The Moo.
Together, the three of them engineered a truly amazing cover that Angus and Julia Stone would be proud of. Lyrically both Tuka and Thelma Plum were spot on and the beat was incredible, not to mention the inclusion of the string section and the strange drum machine. Watch it below and tell us what you think.
