This week saw the second announcement of the Fashion Los Angeles Awards’ winners, with Lady Gaga being honoured as Editor of the Year for her contributions to V Magazine.
The Daily Front Row awards are relatively new, with 2015 being the Fashion Los Angeles Awards’ inaugural year. Lady Gaga is being honoured for her contributions as Guest Editor for V99. Gaga’s issue has been lauded as one of V’s most successful to date, needing two reprints to meet consumer demand. For the issue, the musician orchestrated 16 covers that featured a group of individuals Gaga referred to as her “Fashion Guard.”
In describing her approach in choosing those who starred on alternate V covers, Gaga told V “these are people who have kept me and protected me over the years, because they’ve wanted me to survive. That’s part of the message of this issue: we have to carry each other through the decades and take care of one another and honor each other’s work. I am saying thank you to all these people for everything they’ve given to me. I want to make sure the world knows who they are.”
For V’s editor-in-chief Stephen Gan, the decision to work with Gaga was not a difficult one as the magazine has a long-standing relationship with “part musician, part notorious style setter, part opinionated editor.”
“After all, she had been on the cover four times, swears she was raised on V‘s fashion doctrines, and wrote numerous memos as a contributing editor to the magazine.”
The Fashion Los Angeles Awards will also be honouring some of Gaga’s closest associates, with her stylist and fashion designer Brandon Maxwell being awarded Best New Designer of the Year. Also amongst the awarded, Karl Lagerfeld has supported Gaga over the years and features heavily in V99, including being featured on one of the issue’s alternate covers. Lagerfeld, Maxwell and Gaga join a star-studded guest-list, with now-designer Nicole Ritchie as host, accompanied by names such as Bella Hadid, Jennifer Meyer, Carine Roitfeld, Alber Elbaz, Gigi Hadid, and Kate Hudson.
Gaga has been incredibly busy this year showcasing her diverse talents and passion for the music, arts and fashion industries. After her acclaimed performance at the Grammys, the musician was excited to be walking in Marc Jacobs’ gothic-inspired New York Fashion Week show. “It’s really wonderful that he brought me in as one of his models,” Gaga told Vogue, “…my whole goal is to be here for Marc, making his vision come to life. It’s not about me, it’s about the clothes.”
Through honouring Gaga, the fashion scene is embracing and encouraging her passion and involvement. We are sure to see more involvement from the acclaimed editor and musician in the year to come! The Fashion Los Angeles Awards will take place at LA’s Sunset Tower this Sunday March 20.
