There might be no joy greater than learning here is a new excuse for you to watch Zac Efron for an hour and a half, until you find out you get to watch Zac Efron, Anna Kendrick, Aubrey Plaza and Adam Devine in Hawaii for an hour and a half. Nothing screams Oscars like 4 very funny and attractive people get together for a meet & greet cocktail by the pool in Mike and Dave Need Wedding Dates.Â
“The title is too long”, “I bet all the best bits are in the trailer”, “Zac Efron is overrated”. Hush children, valid as these concerns may be it’s time to rid them from your mind and go directly to the cinema. You’re in for a good ol’ fashioned romantic comedy that not only gives you an opportunity to start quoting Jurassic Park again but teaches you a valuable life lesson about codependency. That’s right, this movie has layers.
Semi based on a true story about brothers who went onto craigslist to find dates to their cousin’s wedding the movie changes cousin to sister and sees Mike and Dave (Efron and Devine) get conned into taking two ‘bad girls’ (Plaza and Kendrick) to a wedding in Hawaii. The two girls find themselves in need of a vacation after being fired from their waitressing jobs for drunkenness (Kendrick’s character still devastated after being jilted at the alter and Plaza just enjoying the adventure). The boys take to craigslist after an ultimatum from their father forces them to re-evaluate their drunken family party behaviour.
Obviously don’t go to this movie hoping for a cinematic master piece, it’s silliness could rival early 1990’s Adam Sandler but that is part of the appeal. There are extravagant hand shake routines, Quad bike stunts and inappropriate day spa scenes. basically everything you expect from a destination wedding.
If you’re down for some light hearted entertainment then this’ll be $15 well spent, Â if you’re just there for some eye candy it’ll be even better spent.
Here is a glimpse at one of the safer clips on offer, even in saying that you might want to use some headphones.
Mike and Dave Need Wedding Dates is in theatres now.
