Mark Shaw was the unofficial photographer of the Kennedy’s and developed a strong friendship with JFK and his wife Jackie, visiting the White House on a regular basis. He worked with Dior between 1952 and 1962, where he became known for his behind the scenes look at the world of haute couture. He worked at Life magazine and at Harper’s Bazaar where he worked with art director Alexey Brodovitch. His photographs of icons of fashion, film, music and art such as Audrey Hepburn, Coco Chanel, Yves Saint Lauren, Brigitte Bardot, Elizabeth Taylor, Grace Kelly, Nico of the Velvet Underground and Pablo Picasso.

Shaw’s work has become in demand, in collections by modern day celebrities such as Ralph Lauren, Tommy Hilfiger, Cindy Crawford, Jennifer Anniston and Martha Stewart who own his work.

The exhibition is called ‘In the Moment’ and is curated by Becker Minty store owner Jason Minty, showing his most famous photos. Prints will be for sale at the exhibition and limited editions will start from $1,450. There is an exhibition opening on Thursday 4th August 2016 at 6.30pm at the Potts Point store. The exhibition will run until 30 September 2016.

“Although most of Mark’s images are directed specifically for magazine shoots, there are many that are a little more ‘in the moment’, often giving us a slightly more behind the scenes or more natural look into the chosen celebrity. These are the images that I favour most – Coco sorting through buttons with a cigarette hanging from her mouth, being a personal favourite” says Jason Minty.

The candid, off the cuff photographs of these icons from the fifties and sixties are the real draw card of this exhibition. For example one photograph shows Audrey Hepburn getting her hair cut, another shows Jackie Kennedy in a relaxed pose in a private study. These unguarded portrayals of fifties idols are very appealing.

The exhibition runs from August 4 – September 30 at Becker Minty 7/81 MacLeay St, Potts Point. 10:30am – 6:00pm Monday to Friday and Saturday – Sunday from 10:00am – 5:00pm.
