Stranger Things dropped a teaser trailer for season two last Wednesday, revealing to us the names of the episodes we will get next year. Though many people are keen for a second season do we actually need one?… Will Stranger Things die out as it goes on?
In my personal opinion … I would love to see a second season of Stranger Things. The show did what Freaks and Geeks was able to achieve … take us all back in time through music, style and homages of celebrated classics of the 1980s.
However, there has been so many examples of successful season ones of TV shows that fall short in its second season. I am afraid that Stranger Things may fall into this trend as season one was so highly rated and praised. So to have a proper look at this we need to weigh out the Pro’s and Con’s.Â
The Pro’s for a second season are that it can actually be better than the first season. Some examples of shows that have achieved this are House of Cards, Breaking Bad and Mad Men. They were able to do this by staying true to, or improving upon, what they did in the first season with their acting and writing. Another obvious point is that fans will get their chance to have questions answered:
- How did Eleven get her powers?
- Where is Eleven now if Detective Hopper is still giving her Eggo’s? (Is she really in the upside down world? Why not just go and get her in those six months?)
- Was that a baby alien Will spat out? What is his mental state after facing such an ordeal?
The Con’s of having a second season are that if Stranger Things is a mystery thriller well … the mystery has already been solved … Will’s home. It can also be a typical show that does not live up to the hype like its previous season. These included shows like Prison Break, True Detective and Heroes. All of them fell just short or into a deep hole and were unable to climb back out. They became confusing and tried too hard to be bigger and better.
With looking at these Pro’s and Con’s we can see that we can not fully commit to a yes or a no about bringing back a second season. It will just depend on the viewer if they will agree or disagree to what Stranger Things may become. Obviously Netflix believes in having a second season of the show and with Netflix being one of the most used source’s for TV shows we should be able to trust their judgement.
Another factor to consider for a successful outcome is the creators. The Duffer Brothers managed to refresh the past for the viewers with an original take of an iconic era. I believe that they will make Stranger Things a show that will live on throughout television history. After what we all experienced with the first season the viewers will be in safe hands with these two.
This trailer is a courageous move by The Duffer Brothers by already giving us the titles of the next season. Fans will be deciphering the meanings behind the title choices for months to come until the second season is on Netflix. I hope fan theories will not play a part in spoiling this show, especially if some theories are correct … which will lose the reason of why we watch thrillers.
What do you think? Should there be a second season of Stranger Things?
