The heartthrob of the Hollywood’s Golden age, Rock Hudson was born Roy Harold Scherer Jr. and was one of the most well known American actors of the 1950’s.

Hudson made his debut with a small part in the Warner Brothers film Fighter Squadron in 1948, where he needed 38 takes before successfully delivering his only line in the film. Honing his craft, the actor received success and recognition with his performance in 1954’s Magnificent Obsession opposite Jane Wyman — it lead to him being declared the most popular actor of the year by Modern screen Magazine.

After completing nearly 70 motion pictures and starring in several television productions during his 40 year career, it was clear he was more than just a gorgeous face. The actor was also known for his comedic timing in movies opposite Doris Day. Hudson’s fame skyrocketed after his performance in George Stevens’s Giant alongside Elizabeth Taylor and James Dean. Both Hudson and Dean were nominated for Oscars in the best actor category from that film.
