FIB 5 Minute Web-Doco Queen MASTERS OF MUSIC Vol.16 “Rock”

Queen bandQueen is renowned for electrifying performances, envied for highly produced anthems like “We Are the Champions” and “We Will Rock You” and beloved for music that melded an array of genres. One of the main British bands of all time was created by Brian May and Roger Taylor in the 70s with the name of “Smile”. After the band’s original lead singer died, the musicians invited the bass player Mike Grose and singer Freddie Bulsara to join them. With this changes, the band was renamed as “Queen” and the iconic vocalist became Freddie Mercury, one of the greatest leaders of a generation.

Originally a progressive rock band, Queen enjoyed mild success with their first two albums before Freddie encouraged them to experiment with extravagant stage and recording techniques. The release of ‘Bohemian Rhapsody’ on 31st October of 1975, from “Night at the Opera” album, was a turning point for the band. At first, the record company was reluctant to put it out, as it was nearly 6 minutes long but a revolutionary promotional video took it to number one in the charts and it stayed there for nine weeks.

Over the next years, Queen established their reputation for extravagant live performances and studio albums full of their unique sound. Their album “News of the World “ contained two memorable anthems “We Will Rock You “ and “ We Are the Champions “ regarded as one of the most successful stadium rock bands ever, amassing a total of 18 number one albums and 18 number one singles.

However, on November of 1991, the world as caught in surprised after announced that he had AIDS. Exhausted after a long illness, he died the next day. The surviving members of the band continued to make music, both together and separately. But Freddie was never forgotten and Queen’s legacy cannot be ignored.
