Earlier this month the creative directors from Kenzo, Humberto Leon and Carol Lim released the fashion film for the Spring/Summer 2017 collection. Titled ‘Music Is My Mistress’, the twelve minutes video doesn’t focus on just fashion, but also music and sensibility. Most importantly it sends a message to respect and celebrate black culture.
Directed by Kahlil Joseph, who is perhaps best known for his work on Beyoncé’s Lemonade, the film stars Jesse Williams (Grey’s Anatomy) as a man who is looking for a woman that has been missing for months, played by Tracee Ellis Ross (Black-ish). This missing woman is described as “African royalty,” and the video features them skipping through Los Angeles using clothes from KENZO’s most recent collection. The soundtrack for the project is designed by Kelsey Lu and the political rap group Shabazz Palaces. They also make appearances in the video.
“The clothing takes second place,” Humberto Leon told ELLE at the premiere of the movie. “It’s our fourth film, and they’ve never been fashion films. I would say each director that made each of the films would say they’re a part of the body of their work and that’s important.”
