Just when you thought you were done with the whole zombie apocalypse and figured you couldn’t handle any more of the whole undead-eating-human-brains shebang dominating your TV and theatre screens, Netflix unveiled their latest show Santa Clarita Diet throwing a whole new level of blood and gore your way.
While zombie film fatigue is a real thing, the strange thing is that we can’t really complain about this one. Starring Drew Barrymore and Timothy Olyphant as our leads and with Victor Fresco in the director’s chair, the show manages to breach new territory with the old formula. Imagine a quirkier, funnier Dexter, with a much more supporting and loving family if you can. Though it may be a comedy, trust us when we say this show isn’t for the faint-hearted or people with weak stomachs. If your meals are usually taken in front of the telly, this is not a show we would suggest having on while you try to eat.
The show follows the Hammond family whose lives are turned upside down when Drew Barrymore’s character, Sheila Hammond has a rather gruesome episode of projectile vomiting while trying to sell a house and wakes up without a heartbeat. Instead of running for the hills like anyone else would, her understanding family rallies behind her, bringing a new meaning to the concept of unconditional love.
Husband Joel, whose idea of excitement while suffering through a mid-life crisis at the beginning of the season is sneakily smoking pot in his car, decides to help his wife murder humans for food. But only really bad humans. Like for instance a young, single, Hitler. Daughter Abby steps up takes charge of finding a cure for her mother. While next door neighbour Eric Bemis uses his creepily large reserve of knowledge about the undead to help the family navigate the rules.
The show gained a lot of buzz way before it hit screens due to the big names attached. Viewers were kept in the dark till the teasers were released earlier this year. While there is still no official word on whether the show will be renewed for a second season it did end on a cliffhanger and with mostly positive reviews from the masses, we have our fingers crossed for its return.
Creator Victor Fresco even hinted in an interview with Entertainment Weekly where he thinks the show can go.
“With any family, crazy situations can be introduced any day, and the strength of the family will determine how they react to those situations, which is where we’ll find our characters.”
