Lorde has released an upbeat new track “Green Light” and its official video to mixed reviews from fans.
The singer had expressed excitement for fans to hear the new song, taking to Twitter to say “I am so proud of this song. It’s very different, and kinda unexpected. It’s complex and funny and sad and joyous and it’ll make you DANCE.”
The track is the first release from the New Zealand born artist in three years and it has adopted a new tone in both sound and visuals for the video clip. Lorde who has previously been known for a darker, more grunge aesthetic is shown with no make up (in a Facebook post she explained she hadn’t had her hair or make up done in a year) wearing a bright pink party dress. She takes on the attitude of the poppy song and has fun getting into her own groove.
She took to twitter again to explain: “It’s the first chapter of a story I’m gonna tell you, the story of the last 2 wild, fluorescent years of my life. This is where we begin.”
Some fans criticized the track for seemingly adopting a sound similar to that of Lorde’s close friend Taylor Swift. The two singers both have worked with producer Jack Antonoff on their recent works, which may account for the similarities.
Lorde has also taken to Twitter to announce her second studio album and the accompanying cover art. While there is no set release date, we do know that the album will be titled “Melodrama” and will be opened by the track “Green Light.” The cover art is an intimate and subdued portrait of the twenty year old that was painted by postmodern artist Sam McKinniss.
In a touching post before her 20th birthday in 2016, Lorde compared her two projects on her Facebook page saying: “Writing Pure Heroine was my way of enshrining our teenage glory, putting it up in lights forever so that part of me never dies, and this record- well, this one is about to show you the new world” (You should check out the entire heart melting post here).
Lorde has definitely confirmed this comparison with her infectiously fun first offering from the new album.
