On your mark, get set… and cry. Or at least we’re pretty sure you will, once you get through Overbrook entertainment’s latest venture, Life in a Year.Â
Titled Life in a Year the film follows the story of a 17-year-old boy, who finds out that his girlfriend is dying. Though we aren’t sure the exact cause yet, we do know that the end is imminent. The looming death leads the young lovebirds to attempt to fit an entire lifetime of memories into her last year of life.
It’s the actors Jaden Smith and Cara Delevingne playing the lead pair that has caused the film to garner so much buzz even before the actors have stepped in front of the camera. Overbrook Entertainment is the production house backing the film which is owned by Jaden’s dad Will Smith. Mitja Okorn has taken on the director’s chair, with Jeffrey Addiss and Will Matthews writing the script.
Naturally, the story is being compared to the 2014 film, The Fault in Our Stars due to overlapping storylines. However, it’s left to be seen if Delevingne and Smith manage to bring something new to what has now almost become the norm in the young adult film formula.Â
Delevingne has previously delved into young adult angst through her debut in Paper Town and has since even shared screen space with her co-star’s dad in Suicide Squad. All eyes will be on Jaden, who will return to the big screen for the first time since his 2013 venture in sci-fi thriller After Earth, which his dad and then co-star Will Smith has called the “most painful failure” of his career.
The film is slated to begin filming later this spring in Toronto. So now all that’s left to do is wait with fingers crossed and tissues at the ready.
