There’s a new trailer out for Netflix’s latest original comedy series GirlBoss and it’s got us seriously excited. The show isn’t your ordinary Mayor of BrokeVille turns into millionaire online business owner overnight shebang. Sure, the project has already had its share of trials and tribulations, doubters and supporters, but it also has a whole lot of spirit and spunk.
The show is based on the winner of the 2014 Goodreads Choice Award for Best Business Book #GIRLBOSS that flooded markets and captivated readers all over the world. The plot loosely follows the journey of American businesswoman Sophia Amoruso’s rise to the top of the online fashion business world with the launch and accession of her brand Nasty Gal.
The show has Britt Robertson playing Amoruso, a face you could have perhaps previously seen on your screen in shows like Under the Dome, The Secret Circle or Life Unexpected. What can we say? We have to admit to being a little thrown after the teaser was dropped, however, the trailer does make a few things clearer. Amaruo stands at the center and Robertson dominates the screen. You almost don’t realise there’s anyone else present around her. Though the show does boast some big names like Dean Norris, Jim Rash, Johnny Simmons, and RuPaul. It’s the people behind the camera that have us shaking, excited in out seats.
The series has managed to lure Charlize Theron into the producer’s chair, alongside Sophia Amoruso herself. It has Emmy-nominated “30 Rock” writer/producer and “Pitch Perfect” screenwriter Kay Cannon wrapped in the robes of showrunner for this one.
The trailer does highlight the fact that the series is loosely based on a true story. We can’t help but scratch our heads and wonder just how much creative freedom that allows for. In reality, the company has dipped its toes in a fair share of legal woes. Recently, it has had to defend itself against allegations of discrimination for illegally firing four pregnant employees and with others coming claiming they were fired for undergoing heart surgery. In 2015 Amaruo even stepped down as Chief Executive Officer. The other truth of the matter is that the brand filed for bankruptcy towards the end of last year. In February, Nasty Gal’s assets were acquired by the rival U.K. fashion website Boohoo.com for $20 million. We are glaringly aware that the story isn’t exactly going to have a happy ending. But perhaps we’re only providing fodder for material for a possible season 2.
The 13-episode Season 1 of Girlboss is set to arrive on 21st April on Netflix.
