What do Taraji P. Henson, Tina Turner and Foxy Brown have in common? They’re all channelled a retrospective take on an assassin-focused action thriller set in the midst of the roaring blaxploitation era of cinema – the seventies!
Proud Mary is directed by Babak Nafaji (London Has Fallen) from a script written by Steve Antin (Burlesque), John Stuart Newman (Dirty Work) and Christian Swegal (Stasis). The trailer shows Taraji P. Henson (Hidden Figures) playing Mary, a calm assassin from Boston, who is getting suited up for a job and coolly selecting her weapon of choice from an armory hidden away in her closet.
There is a moment of silence at this point before cutting to an action-heavy barrage of sequenced shots to up the tempo of the trailer as we hear Tina Turner’s ‘Proud Mary’ jumping into gear. She meets a young boy toward the end of the trailer on an apparent hit gone wrong which sparks her maternal instincts.
Billy Brown, Jahi Di’Allo Winston and Danny Glover are also among the cast.
Either way, following Wonder Woman and Atomic Blonde, we’re loving the recent resurgence of ladies in retro fashion kicking some serious ass in another era action flicks. Even better, with Black Panther on the horizon, the future looks more promising.
Proud Mary will deliver an action-packed flick in knee-high leather boots that’s both stimulating and visually exciting when it hits cinemas next year. Check out the trailer below!
