We’ll all be watching new Star Wars content until we die; which let’s face it, doesn’t sound like the worst thing in the world. So, what are the scruffy nerfherders over at Lucasfilm dishing up this time?
Apparently Rian Johnson’s The Last Jedi is really, really good; so much so, that Lucasfilm have now put faith in him to create and direct an entire trilogy of his own. That’s right, we’ll be getting yet another Star Wars trilogy. One that has a cast of entirely new characters and doesn’t involve the Skywalkers whatsoever. Apparently, the trilogy will “introduce new characters from a corner of the galaxy that Star Wars lore has never before explored”, which is pretty exciting. Kathleen Kennedy, president of Lucasfilm, has thrown her wholehearted support behind the venture:
“We all loved working with Rian on The Last Jedi. He’s a creative force, and watching him craft The Last Jedi from start to finish was one of the great joys of my career. Rian will do amazing things with the blank canvas of this new trilogy.”
Not only that, but Disney also announced that a live-action television series set in the Star Wars universe will be coming to their recently-announced streaming platform. The yet-to-be-named service will be launching in 2019, and they’ve already said they’re going to be charging less than Netflix, so there’s that. If Star Wars isn’t your thing, they’ll also be dropping High School Musical and Monsters Inc. series as well as various Marvel content.
This is the first time Star Wars has attempted a live action series, having only had animated ones in the past. In a world of DC and Marvel TV shows, it’s a great opportunity to create a sci-fi series with a long-lasting storyline. It also opens up opportunities for more diversity in Star Wars, something that fans have been waiting for.
Either way, we’ll be looking forward to tons of new Star Wars content over the coming years, including the last two films in the current trilogy and Solo: A Star Wars Story. The Last Jedi will be released December 14 in Australia, so look forward to that in the meantime.
