Popular forum website Reddit is redesigning its website for the first time in a decade.
The new design will apply to the desktop version of the site, and in coming weeks users will be able to choose the latest version of Reddit. Reddit said in their announcement,
“Today, we’re beginning to give a small group of users access to the desktop redesign at random. We’re starting with a small group to test the load on our servers and plan to make the opt-in available to everyone in the coming weeks. On behalf of the team, thank you for all of your comments, posts, bug tests, conversations with our designers, creative ideas, and other feedback over the past year. We are very proud of what we have accomplished together and we are excited for you to get your hands on it.”
There are three different designs to view the site: card, classic, and compact.
Card view displays posts in a Facebook/Twitter-like style layout
The classic view is the old Reddit design
And, the compact layout shows the headlines for quick browsing.
A makeover for the popular website has been in the works for the past year-and-a-half.
Reddit’s co-founder and CEO Steve Huffman spoke about the need for a redesign last year; describing the site’s current layout as a “dystopian Craigslist“, and that the information-dense format was often confronting to new users.
