While performing on international stages, Australian band Psychedelic Porn Crumpets has just released their new single “Bill´s Mandolin” which is a taste of their third upcoming album, And Now For The Whatchamacalli. Currently in the UK, after their debut on stage in the US, the band are ready for their Australian shows, and for their performance at Splendour in the Grass 2019.
FIB was given the opportunity to chat with Jack McEwan about Psychedelic Porn Crumpets’ latest album release and upcoming international tours.
“When we were in the UK on our last tour, I was given my Grandad’s old mandolin/lute thing which I remember playing as a kid. It was such a nice gift that I had to take back to Australia, the only problem was it didn’t have a case. I carried it through plenty of customs, slept with it, took it out to pubs, navigated the streets of Amsterdam and passed out with it. It became the tour emblem and once I got back to Perth and I wanted to write an Ode to Bill and the travels with the mandolin that summed up the tour and sounded as chaotic as the adventures that ensued”, declared McEwan, the band’s singer and songwriter, as he explained the story behind their new single “Bill’s Mandolin” which was released on the 12th April, 2019.
“Bill’s Mandolin” is part of their third upcoming album And Now for The Whatchamacalli, which will be released on Friday 31st May. Just like that single, the whole album is inspired by experiences. Continuing with their psychedelic, grunge and rock genre, McEwan considered that they try to keep it as fun as possible and make it a really upbeat version.
“The original concept was to take a 1930’s carnival that had been re-imagined for future generations,” he said. “As we started traveling, I was swept off into my own kind of circus, the odyssey of touring life. Large nights out, larger characters, drunken recollections of foreign cities and rabbit hole-ing into insanity”.
The inspiration behind this album is a documentary that McEwan saw when he was growing up. It took place in 1942, during war times, and the songwriter remembers looking at children running around and playing with a certain innocence of not knowing the horrors that surrounded them during the war.
“This album is capturing the innocence of children in war. That innocence of not understanding where you are and escaping from reality. So, we want to keep it really entertaining,” explained McEwan.
Most of their songs are based on experiences, however, McEwan considers himself more of an audio person who focuses on the music before the lyrics. The reason for this is for the songs to escape all time limitations and not be closed to an opinion and message that can change over time. “I want my music to be left untouched. I don’t want to label it because things, like politics, the economy, society, changes as time goes by.”
Besides their upcoming third album, the band had an impressive debut tour in the US and is currently touring around the UK, with sold out tickets for their shows. They will then be returning to Australia to perform, including a massive homecoming show in Perth’s Astor Theatre, before heading on to the Splendour in the Glass stage this July.
The band have signed with Marathon Records for global territories and are working with Caroline Australia on the domestic front. Psychedelic Porn Crumpets has all of their energy, and anticipation, stored up for the adventures they have ahead of them.
“We will release the record and then, hopefully, get on the next record. We’re ready for it”, enthused McEwan.
