Iconic 90s slasher, I Know What You Did Last Summer, is getting the television-treatment with a new Amazon Prime series to be directed by James Wan.
I Know What You Did Last Summer is the latest classic franchise to get a small-screen reboot, after years of talk of a feature-length remake.
The 1997 original stars Jennifer Love Hewitt, Sarah Michelle Gellar, Ryan Phillippe and Freddie Prinze Jr. It centres on four young adult friends stalked by a murderous, hook-wielding madman exactly one year after covering up a horrible crime.
The film draws its main inspiration from the urban legend of The Hook, in which a killer with a hook for a hand attacks young lovers in parked cars on lovers’ lanes.
I Know What You Did Last Summer was followed by two sequels. I Still Know What You Did Last Summer slashed up success in1998. The next offering, I’ll Always Know What You Did Last Summer, was released straight to DVD in 2006.
Production is in its early stages. But we do know that it’s going to be directed by Hollywood heavyweight James Wan, of Aquaman fame. Fittingly, Wan is better known for producing titles in the horror genre, including Saw, Annabelle, Insidious, The Conjuring and The Nun.
A host of hot new talent is reportedly on board for the remake.
The horror super-producer had a hand in the distinct visual imagery of both The Conjuring series and Insidious. The fluid, point of view camera style that scans through moving shots has been influential in contemporary horror franchises.
We can only hope that this latest project follows in these footsteps.
