With 2020 just around the corner, Pirelli has wrapped up his ‘Looking for Juliet’ themed calendar. And although the full calendar won’t be released for a few more months, Pirelli has shared a series of behind-the-scenes shots.
Inspired by Romeo and Juliet’s heroin, the shoot features a diverse gathering of nine women “that all embody a concept of love and who, because of the roles they have performed and the lives they have lived, could easily play the part of a modern Juliet.”
Yara Shahidi, Indya Moore, Emma Watson, Kristen Stewart, Rosalía, Claire Foy, Mia Goth, Chris Lee and Stella Roversi’s interpretations of the iconic character was captured by legendary Italian fashion photographer Paolo Roversi in bare, hueless rooms and gothic courtyards.
While being shot by Roversi, the women performed an excerpt from the Shakespeare classic in Paris and Verona.
“There’s no Romeo here, there are only Juliets who show up for a casting call, respond to questions, and reveal their own version of the character before re-enacting a passage from the tragedy, in costume,” Roversi told Vogue.
Naturally, each star brought a different aesthetic to Juliet. Emma Watson’s interpretation saw her in a bright pink gown with a white veil, conveying Juliet’s femininity and innocence. Meanwhile, Kristen Stewart opted for a more androgynous look with a black blazer and white, wide leg trousers. Claire Foy’s dramatic vision included a crown, red hair to her waist and many a feathers and gold. Yara Shahidi drew inspiration from the Victorian era, creating a look that fused tradition with her own ideas of royalty.
“I love my curls, so we turned them into a crown” she said.
Despite initially being perceived as a pin-up calendar, over the past few years we have witnessed Pirelli champion diversity and the empowerment of women. And the 2020 edition of the calendar is no exception.
“I wanted a true casting, with women who would correspond to a kind of a journey featuring women of today from different countries and cultures,” Roversi said. “Every one of them was marvellous. They all brought intensity and lots of emotion to a project that above all glorifies beauty and love.”
With only one-third left of 2019, the ‘Looking for Juliet’ calendar will be available soon.
