Fast and Furious star Tyrese Gibson has come out swinging at the new Fast spin off film ‘Hobbs and Shaw’ and one if its stars, Dwayne Johnson. Tyrese took to Instagram to roast the film’s financial return for being the lowest since Tokyo Drift.
“Breaking up the family doesn’t have the value you think it does,” Tyrese said on Instagram.
In the US domestic box office, Hobbs and Shaw grossed $60 million on its opening weekend, dethroning The Lion King. This was a $38 million drop to the film that came before it, Fate of the Furious. Despite under-performing domestically, Hobbs and Shaw managed to gross $180 Million worldwide and is yet to open in China. Gibson seems to believe that the financial drop occurred due to the original crew not being involved in the film.
Since the films announcement in 2017, Gibson has been critical over it’s existence. Gibson took to Twitter to attack Dwayne Johnson and his producer for signing on for the spin off and delaying the upcoming Fast and Furious 9 by one year. In a lengthier post on Instagram, he wrote: “Congratulations to @TheRock…for making the fast and the furious franchise about YOU.”
Even with a disappointing opening, the film has garnered critical success as it currently sits on 66% on Rotten Tomatoes and a sequel is still expected by Universal.
Gibson has been critical of Dwayne Johnson’s involvement in the Fast and Furious franchise for quite some time now. In 2017, it was reported that there was on set issues between Dwayne Johnson and Vin Diesel and Gibson sided with Vin Diesel.
Dwayne Johnson has confirmed he will not be appearing in Fast 9.
