Covid-19 has changed the face of many industries. Many industries have had to adapt and evolve to survive during this crisis, but what is unclear is what these industries would look like Post Covid-19.
The fashion industry has always been at the forefront of change and evolution, but you’d expect that from an industry which sets trends. In the past weeks, we’ve seen this industry go from strength to strength, proving you don’t need much to set a trend or revolutionise a whole industry. With the aid of social media, it’s like nothing has changed at all.
The first “high fashion runway show entirely from home” just took place, complete with famous models such as Natasha Poly and Karlie Kloss to name a few as well as designers. So Is This the Future of the Fashion Show? Well, it looks like that for now.
The fashion show form has lasted for decades precisely because it works so well in real life, but in changing times we need to adapt. With Shanghai and Moscow both going digital for their fashion weeks in late March and April. It’s easy to say the fashion worlds gone virtual. At least for now.
Runways aren’t the only thing that’s changing, fashion magazines are too. The fashion world has not stopped turning even in the face of a global pandemic. Magazines and fashion labels are making the most of the easily accessible medium of Facetime, which even you could operate.
Could FaceTime be Fashion’s New Medium we think so?
The intersection between Facetime and high fashion first took the internet by storm after model Bella Hadid posted her work for Vogue Italia’s April 2020 issue Shot by Brianna Capozzi.
The use of social media and fashion has been the perfect partnership. With the click or even a swipe, you can have access to some of the most amazing pieces of fashion. So, it’s not crazy to think that this partnership is working so well during this pandemic. YouTube hosted its first virtual runway show last week.
Youtube dubbed it the “first-of-its-kind … A virtual fashion show”.
The full show can be viewed here:
The event brought together some of the industry’s most iconic names and faces. It was filmed in their homes or places of social isolation. The event aimed to raise awareness for research efforts led by the amfAR Fund to Fight COVID-19. The virtual show was directed by Fabien Constant and hosted by Derek Blasberg, Head of Fashion and Beauty, YouTube.
Participating designers included Virgil Abloh, Kim Kardashion, Pierpaolo Piccioli, Diane von Furstenburg, Riccardo Tisci, Jacquemus and Maria Grazia amongst others. Models were filmed walking makeshift catwalks. This including kitchens, living rooms, gardens and balconies.
My final thoughts, a world post-COVID-19 will be filled with uncertainty. Its unclear is what industries would look like Post Covid-19. But what I do know is that the fashion industry will always continue to adapt and evolve. We’re seeing it happen before our eyes, virtual runways, Facetime photoshoots the possibilities are endless. The world is changing and the fashion world is right on its heels.
