Leaked artwork and audio snippets of Lorde’s “Solar Power” hit the web prior to its summer solstice release date.
Due to the album leak online, the release date bumped up to June 10. Back in June of 2020, NZ native Lorde sent an email to her fans containing a life update. The email explains that she “started going back to the studio again” in December 2019 to keep herself busy. During this time, she describes making “happy, playful” music and mentions that she thinks her next album is “so f*cking good,” and “she is truly jazzed for you to heart it”.
The Inspiration
Lorde’s 2020 Antarctica trip resulted in a 100-page photo book titled “Going South”. In an email, sent to fans in November she says,
“I realised after the trip that what my brain had been craving was a visit to an alternate realm.”
In stark contrast, Lorde’s upcoming album “Solar Power” focuses heavily on summer vibes. A post with further information to fans explained the release’s connection to the summer soltice.
Solar Power is Coming
August 20 is the official release date for Solar Power. In December 2020, Lorde alluded to the universe of her album in an interview with Blackbird Skyplane. She has remained uncertain when the record might be complete. The chaos which the pandemic has caused has also had an impact on the process. Lorde explained,
“I’m telling people that something is taking shape. More than ‘taking shape’ – something is – there’s a thing. But, you know, I really take my time and I like to know the whole universe, the whole cinematic universe for what I’m making, so I’m in that process right now. I don’t know how much more I want to say. It’s such a kooky year in terms of knowing anything about timing, but I guess with me, as an artist generally, no one ever knows when anything’s coming anyway…”
The Solar Power Tour
In support of the album’s release, the singer-songwriter has announced a lineup of tour dates. Shows are taking place in the UK, Europe, North America, Canada, Australia and New Zealand, kicking off on February 26. The first show takes place at Electric Avenue Festival in New Zealand and finishes up in Berlin at the Verti Music hall on June 23. Pre-sale tickets are available from June 24.
