Filming in New Zealand has officially finished for season 1 of Amazon’s The Lord of The Rings series. The studio marking this occasion by offering fans a first look at Middle-earth – as well as announcing a release date.
The contender for the world’s most expensive TV show will debut September 2nd 2022 in 240 international territories via Amazon. Its been almost eight years since the release of Peter Jackson’s universally panned, closing instalment of The Hobbit trilogy, The Battle of the Five Armies.
About The Series
There are a lot of teasers and possibilities of who might be adventuring in this new series. Fans with knowledge of Tolkien have been speculating ever since an official synopsis broke on TheOneRing.net earlier this year. The synopsis says:
“Amazon Studios’ forthcoming series brings to screens for the very first time the heroic legends of the fabled Second Age of Middle-earth’s history. This epic drama is set thousands of years before the events of J.R.R. Tolkien’s ‘The Hobbit and ‘The Lord of the Rings,’ and will take viewers back to an era in which great powers were forged, kingdoms rose to glory and fell to ruin, unlikely heroes were tested, hope hung by the finest of threads, and the greatest villain that ever flowed from Tolkien’s pen threatened to cover all the world in darkness.
Beginning in a time of relative peace, the series follows an ensemble cast of characters, both familiar and new, as they confront the long-feared re-emergence of evil to Middle-earth. From the darkest depths of the Misty Mountains to the majestic forests of the elf-capital of Lindon, to the breathtaking island kingdom of Númenor, to the furthest reaches of the map, these kingdoms and characters will carve out legacies that live on long after they are gone.”
Next For The Franchise
The franchise has since released merchandising, games and multiple blockbusters and award-winning films.
There is also an anime film is in the works called The Lord of the Rings: The War of the Rohirrim. The animated film is being made by Warner Bros. Animation and New Line Cinema.
Amazon Prime Video has also been searching for other intellectual property to fill out its Prime Video streaming library. In May, Amazon purchased the iconic movie studio MGM in a deal valued at $8.45 billion. This gave Amazon a library of film and TV shows with the studio’s more than 4,000 films and 17,000 shows. That includes popular franchises such as James Bond, Rocky and The Handmaid’s Tale.
“As Bilbo says: ‘Now I think I am quite ready to go on another journey” says showrunners JD Payne and Patrick McKay.
Amazon Prime Video’s Lord of The Rings Series is out on 22 September 2022.
