The trailer for Paul Verhoeven’s long-awaited erotic lesbian nun romance Benedetta is here.
The film stars Virginie Efira, Charlotte Rampling, Daphné Patakia, and Lambert Wilson. Director Paul Verhoeven is known for controversial films including Basic Instinct and Showgirls.
Benedetta is the story of a nun who suffers from disturbing religious and erotic visions. A fellow nun is assigned to help her through the visions she’s having, but she ends up having a romantic affair with her. Then, she starts showing signs of stigmata, and Jesus appears to her.
The official synopsis from IFC Films reads: “A 17th-century nun in Italy suffers from disturbing religious and erotic visions. She is assisted by a companion, and the relationship between the two women develops into a romantic love affair. Based on Judith C. Brown’s ‘Immodest Acts: The Life of a Lesbian Nun in Renaissance Italy.”
Some Catholics are against and protesting for the film due to how sacrilegious it is. Not only this, the screenwriter of the film, Gerard Soeteman, has distanced himself from the project because he “is very unhappy with the director’s emphasis on the sexual aspect of the true-life story of a lesbian nun in the Renaissance.”

The film releases on December 3, 2021.
