The Dressmaker (directed by Jocelyn Moorhouse) starring Kate Winslet, Liam Hemsworth, Hugo Weaving and Judy Davis topped the box office during its first week and continues to maintain its high rank, becoming the sixth highest grossing Australian film according to The Australian. Directed by Peter Weir and known for its use of interesting film techniques, this period film centres on the search for three boarding schoolgirls who disappear during an excursion at the Hanging Rock. It is implied that something supernatural is involved. The film is full of suspense and mystery. It would leave you at the edge of your seat.

Muriel’s Wedding is a feel-good film starring Toni Collette. It depicts a harsh picture of pursuing your dreams. Muriel wishes nothing but to have the best wedding ever. But her social/personal life is not up to standards. Missing the vibe of 90s romantic comedies? Then sit back and enjoy this movie.

3. Animal Kingdom (2010)

An interesting piece, Animal Kingdom centres on Joshua Cody (James Frecheville) moving in with his relatives, a crime family, after his mother’s death. His relatives soon teach him their ways in the world of crime. If you’re a fan of mob films, Animal Kingdom is a promising one you can’t refuse.

4. Strictly Ballroom (1992)

One of the highest grossing Australian films, Strictly Ballroom follows champion dancer Scott (Paul Mercurio) who wants to show his own original moves but is unable to because of rules. Encouraged by his father, Scott breaks the rules and takes beginner dancer Fran as his partner, risking his reputation. Highly theatrical and with amazing costumes, it’s no wonder the film continues to dazzle its way into people’s hearts.
