This week we found out we would be getting the answer to a question that has been troubling us our whole lives. What if food really did have feelings?
It might have come as a shock to you that Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg (This is the End, Bad Neighbours) would be the ones to enlighten us yet here we are. The long awaited trailer for their new feature Sausage Party hits us with the existential feels while almost guaranteeing 90 minutes of horrified laughter.
The story follows a hotdog named Frank (Get it? Like a frankfurt) and his band of food friends as they journey from the supermarket to a shopper’s house, relishing in what life has to offer them. Things take a turn when they realise being bought means being cooked and eaten and Frank must get back to the supermarket to warn everyone else. It’s Pixar meats torture porn meats anything Seth Rogen has ever gotten his hands on.
In an unsurprising turn of events Rogen is joined by James Franco, Paul Rudd, Bill Hader, Jonah Hill, Michael Cera, Danny McBride, Anders Holm, Edward Norton, Nick Kroll, Kristen Wiig and Salma Hayek. Â Renowned musical composer and Oscar Winner Alan Menken (Aladdin, Pocahontas, The Little Mermaid)Â created the store wide musical number. “He’s deeply ashamed of this,” Rogen Jokes.
The films is said to poke fun at religious and geopolitical issues, like all controversial adult cartoons are supposed to, but while the movie won’t be released till later this year some organisations already have beef with the premise. Environmental groups have shunned it for it’s disrespect towards animals (personifying inanimate objects is all well and good, except when those ‘inanimate objects’ used to be living).
If you’re worried that the feature will not push the envelope far enough, that animation is for children and/or believe that a cartoon about food couldn’t possibly be perverse, keep in mind Sacha Baron Cohen (Grimsby, Borat) described the film as “The single craziest f..king thing I’ve seen in my whole life”. Take a moment to let that sink in…
Sausage Party will be released in August and is sure to give new meaning to the term ‘Food Porn’. Enjoy.
