The first real look at DC’s Justice League was unveiled at this year’s Comic Con in San Diego, and first impressions are slightly underwhelming.
The Justice League is the DCU’s answer to Marvel’s Avengers and if the footage shown at Comic Con is anything to go by, Warner Bros. is taking that to heart. There is a distinct attempt to instil humour into this footage, something that has always come easy to Marvel, at basically every turn. The problem is that DC has always been that little bit darker than Marvel and for the most part that’s what fans love about it. It’s what DC is good at.
From an objective point of view, this teaser falls flat because the jokes seem forced and end up being pretty lame. Bruce Wayne is diminished as a character when he’s trying to wisecrack, The Flash just didn’t sell his performance, and the banter between Wonder Woman and Batman seemed too contrived.
Of course, fans who have been long awaiting this team to get together will still be excited and there’s no doubt the film promises to be an action-packed spectacle. Directed by Zack Snyder, you couldn’t expect anything else but I do worry about how consistent the tone will be.
For the most part, the footage shows how Bruce Wayne recruits his mismatched bunch to the Justice League. He has more trouble with some than others. Aquaman especially isn’t particularly keen on the idea. One thing the trailer does have going for it is a fantastic soundtrack and it does build anticipation very well. Take a look and see for yourself.
How do you feel about Justice League? Are you impressed by the trailer and do you think the injection of humour to the DC universe will be a positive or negative?
