The 59th Grammy awards made some searing headlines as the who’s who of the music world arrived in their glamorous best at the Staples Center in Los Angeles.
The Grammys was hosted by a Brit this year, a first in the show’s history. James Corden, who has gained fame across the pond with his Late Late show and carpool karaoke fulfilled his duties well. He mixed a healthy dose of humour with political jokes to pull the evening along smoothly.
Adele who opened the show with a flawless rendition of Hello, clinched five wins throughout the evening, bagging all the top honours including Record Of The Year, Album Of The Year and Song Of The Year, Best Pop Solo Performance, and Best Pop Vocal Album. The singer touchingly dedicated her Album of the year win to Beyonce.
“I can’t possibly accept this award,” she said during her acceptance speech. “The Lemonade album was just so monumental, Beyoncé. It was so monumental and well thought-out and beautiful and soul-baring… we appreciate that. All of us artists here adore you. You are our light.”
A heavily pregnant Beyonce took to the stage to perform Love Drought and Sandcastles from her album Lemonade. The performance literally forced us to hold our breath, and the at times gravity defying performance cemented her well deserved place on the throne.
Pop princess Rihanna was nominated for a total of eight Grammys but returned home empty-handed. She did, however, appear to have a rather enjoyable method of surviving the evening. Hey, we’re not judging, it’s what everyone at home was doing too right?
The show saw some great tributes to fallen legends. Adele appeared center stage once again to pay homage to George Michael. Musical God Prince was remembered and brought back by Bruno Mars, The Time and Morris Day.

Fresh back from her Super Bowl performance, Lady Gaga dominated the stage through her collaboration with Metallica. In the grand tradition of the Grammy awards, their performance faced a few technical glitches. The raw talent of the two still managed to pack a strong punch.
The 59th Grammys awards saw some big voices take centre stage. Apart from the political statements and technical mishaps, the evening managed to send a positive message to everyone all around.
