Last Friday, Lucasfilm released the teaser trailer for the highly anticipated 8th movie of the Star Wars saga; Star Wars Episode VIII: The Last Jedi.
You could be forgiven for missing a few things in the teaser trailer if you were too busy flailing and trying not to pass out from sheer excitement. Although only two minutes and twelve seconds long, this teaser trailer gave a lot of fodder for speculation. Which is great, because that’s exactly what Star Wars fans are well trained in.
Always tight-lipped Lucasfilm and Disney have given away little to no information on what Episode VIII will entail whilst the Official Star Wars Films Website describes the eighth installation of the series as “The next chapter in the Skywalker saga”. Thanks guys, real helpful -__-”
With the movies already divorcing themselves from the Expanded Universe comics and novels; which inspired the new movies; and with everyone involved staying religiously quiet on the subject, what can this teaser trailer tell us about what to expect in The Last Jedi?
Luke’s Island of Solitude
In Force Awakens we last see Rey rocking up to Luke Skywalker’s Island Of Solitude on the planet Ahch-To, and then presenting him his lightsaber. The first thing we see when the trailer opens is our forever fave Rey (Daisy Ridley) dramatically smacking her palm on the rocky ground of said island whilst gasping for breath.
This could be a sign that she has been vigorously training to use The Force or even maybe become a Jedi, with Luke Skywalker (Mark Hamill) as her mentor. Eagle-eyed fans also spotted her practising her lightsaber skills in another portion of the trailer. Another fan theory is that she has just had a vision, as her gasping for breath is synonymous with her visions in The Force Awakens.
A lot of the trailer is set on or features this island which suggests that it is indeed going to be a setting for character growth. The whole beginning of the trailer (where the island is primarily featured) feels like an instructional video; with Skywalker giving instruction to “Breathe…. Just breathe…” Maybe he also talking to all those fans out there either struggling to catch their breath or had forgotten how to breathe???
The last scene we see of the island is Rey using the force to levitate rocks, which presumably signifies that her training is complete and that she has mastered The Force.
Buckle in, because it’s going to be a wild ride from here (don’t forget to breathe)
We get a glimpse of our number one commander in charge General Leia Organa (the Late Carrie Fisher) in the war room. Even though it’s just a few seconds view of her from behind you can tell that she is her usual stoic no-nonsense self. We all wish were as composed as Leia.
Directly after that, we see Kylo Ren’s mask (Adam Driver) SMASHED AND SMOKING ON THE FLOOR!!!! How did it get that way? More importantly, why is it only smoking from one eye-hole??? Does this mean that he gets defeated? Does he lose the helmet just in time? Is he going to be wearing an eye-patch for the rest of the film? WE HAVE SO MANY QUESTIONS!!!!
We then see Finn (John Boyega), who appears to be unconscious in what appears to be his storm trooper suit; which just raises even more questions! What happened to everyone’s favourite cinnamon roll?! Why is he back in his storm trooper gear?! HASN’T HE SUFFERED ENOUGH???
Would it even be Star Wars without a run-for-your-life scene, some beautiful explosions and a light saber battle?
The last scene that we are left with is of Luke Skywalker’s silhouette, proclaiming that “It’s time for the Jedi…. To end.” Dun dun dun.
Star Wars Episode VIII: The Last Jedi is set to release worldwide on the 15th of December 2017. Until then, you can try to find more hidden clues about what to expect from the latest instalment of the Star Wars Saga by watching the teaser trailer here.
