Wonder Woman smashes the box office record for a female-directed feature, crossing the $100million mark for North America and $200million internationally over the weekend. Boom! Take that, skeptics who said female-centric films wouldn’t sell.
Directed by Patty Jenkins, Wonder Woman took in $100.5 million in North America, wildly exceeding expectations and setting the record for highest debut weekend for a female-directed feature. The film knocked down the previous opening record for Sam Taylor-Johnson’s Fifty Shades of Grey at $81.7million.
This has also resulted in Wonder Woman standing at the 15th largest opening weekend for a comic book adaptation all-time. Notably, this means the film beat the opening numbers for the first Thor and Captain American franchise films. Even more notably, the Wonder Woman opening showed a strong female audience attendance of 52%, a significant number for a genre that has previously been dominated by men.
Can we finally destroy the myth that people won’t go see films directed by women about women? Or that women-centric superhero films are doomed to fail? We think this proves pretty conclusively that there is a hunger out there for female representation in films.
The bevvy of Hollywood stars that have shown up on social media to support the film certainly think so. Check out what they have been saying here!
