Over 100,000 people flocked to the fabulous Flemington racecourse on Saturday for the first of Melbourne’s four-day racing festival. With the carnival set to boost the state economy by more than $427 million, all eyes were on Australia’s racing capital.
Of course, it was the fashion flock turning heads this weekend, with thousands draped in their finest black and white. The street style was bolder and more fashion-forward than ever. Jumpsuits, pantsuits and tuxedo jackets were ever-more popular, as the style-set eagerly reworked the traditionally strict dresscode. Patterns and prints were swapped in favour of chic, bold colours, leaving the serious style statements to oversized silhouettes and ornate detailing. Lace, ruffles, tassels and embroidery were seen everywhere and necklines were worthy of their own headline, with off-the-shoulder and one-shoulder looks making a splash trackside. The hats remained mostly simple, with the oversized, wide-brim look taking centre stage. There was also a smattering of turbans and embellished crowns for a decidedly Parisian feel.
Let’s take a look at some of Saturday’s most stylish:
