Discovering and Testing Cannabidiol

Cannabidiol is being touted as a magical elixir, like the Snake Oils of yore, a cure-all for whatever ails you, now available in carbonated canned beverages, partnered with coffee beans, infused in bath bombs, even added to Fidoʼs dog treats. But maybe itʼs just a fix for our anxious times.

Itʼs hard to say the precise moment when CBD ceased to be the three-letter acronym for ‘The Central Business District’ and became the voguish cannabis derivative that promises to fix all that is broken in our miserable screen addicted anxious lives.

Snake oil was a traditional Chinese medicament utilising fat extracted from the Chinese water snake. It was a rubefacient and/or ointment and was applied topically to relieve minor physical pain. It has been used in traditional Chinese medicine for many centuries and was a relatively common medication prescribed by doctors ascribing the practice of traditional Chinese medicine.

So how did CBD go from Snake Oil to modern panacea?

Maybe it was in January, when Mandy Moore, hours before the Golden Globes, told Coveteur that she was experimenting with CBD oil to relieve the pain from wearing high heels. “It could be a really exciting evening,” she said. “I could be floating this year.”

Maybe it was in July, when Willie Nelson introduced a line of CBD-infused coffee beans called Willieʼs Remedy. “Itʼs two of my favourites, together in the perfect combination,” he said in a statement.

Or maybe it was earlier this month, when Dr. Sanjay Gupta gave a qualified endorsement of CBD on The Dr. Oz Show. “I think there is a legitimate medicine here,” he said. “Weʼre talking about something that could really help people.”

So not to be a Philistine, I jumped online and bagged me a bottle. 10 days later a brown unmarked parcel arrived from DHL. Inside was a brown glass bottle with an eye dropper in the cap, no users guide, or instruction manual on dosage or such. So, I would just fill 3 eyedropper loads and squirt the green oily liquid into my early morning daily smoothie.

Excuse me for being sceptical but the last time I heard this Tsunami of sunshine, was when we were touted that social media was going to bring all of us on the planet together. But for the moment I’m continuing my experiment.
