Netflix’s popularity can be credited to numerous features, one being the unmatchable amount of international entertainment available on the outlet.
It seems there is a common misconception about Bollywood cinema with many simply imagining melodramatic acting and multiple dance numbers when Indian movies come to mind.
However, this is anything but the case. Sure, bursting out into song and dance is something Hindi cinema has no shortage of but it has grown and progressed immensely since its beginnings.
Today, it is a thriving industry with staggering revenue and worldwide fame.
Even so, it is clear that because of certain pre-conceived misunderstanding, there are still many audiences who have missed out on the masterpieces that have come out of India.

Ittefaq (2017)
A suspenseful mystery thriller that’ll have you guessing until the end. When two very different people become prime suspects in a double murder, you find yourself not knowing who to trust. Both present completely conflicting stories about what happened the night of the crime and Police officer Dev is set out to find the truth. This movie had me hating my judgements by the end.
Sanju (2018)
A bio-pic on the iconic Bollywood actor Sanjay Dutt and his difficult journey to the top. Starring Ranbir Kapoor, the movie follows all the ups and downs of Dutt’s life including his drug addiction, jail sentence and terrorism convictions. Watch it for Kapoor’s flawless performance and undeniable talent.
Barfi! (2012)
A heart-touching drama that follows the life of Shruthi, a young woman who rejects a hearing and speech impaired man, marrying someone else. When their paths cross again years later, you see Barfi in love with an autistic girl leaving Shruti to regret her choice and her marriage. Priyanka Chopra’s acting as the autistic love interest is the highlight of the film.
Tamasha (2015)
One of the most underrated Hindi films, in my opinion, that definitely did not receive the praise it deserved. A young couple meet in Corsica deciding not to reveal their true names and personalities and vow to never meet again after the trip. However, once back in the real world, Tara discovers she is in love with the man she met in France. After tracking him down and starting a relationship with Ved, she discovers he is not the same man she fell in love with.
PINK (2016)
A gripping drama that follows the case of three young women who are unfairly accused of a crime. Legendary actor Amitabh Bachan plays a retired lawyer who steps forward to help the girls prove their innocence. PINK tackles important issues that are all too relevant in India today.
Padman (2018)
An inspiring true story about a man who went against what is deemed culturally acceptable in his East Indian village for his new wife. After discovering the unsanitary way menstruation is dealt with amongst women in India, Lakshmi tries to revolutionise the production of sanitary napkins by creating his own. This leads his life into a whirlwind of difficulties, struggles but ultimately, triumph.
Andhadhun (2018)
Any Bollywood buff would know that if the movie stars Ayushman Khurana, you’re in for a treat. Andhadhun follows a blind pianist who gets tangled into a series of mysterious event after being present at the scene of a crime he could not have witnessed.
Kahaani (2012)
One of the best mystery thrillers to come out of Bollywood, Kahaani is a chilling story about a pregnant woman searching for her missing husband. After travelling across the world in an effort to find him, Vidya is left confused when everyone she asks denies her husband ever existed. An unmissable film with twists that you will remember forever.
Dangal (2016)
An Amir Khan starrer. Need I say more? Dangal became the highest grossing Indian film in overseas markets earning upwards of $260 million. The film is based on a true story following the journey of Mahavir Phogat who, despite societal pressures, trains his daughters to wrestle for the Commonwealth Games and bring home a gold medal for India, something he was unable to do in his wrestling days.
Drishiyam (2015)
One of the most unforgettable films I have ever seen. Drishiyam is a drama mystery that explores the lengths to which a man goes to, to save his family from the dark side of the law after an unfortunate event occurs amongst them. Clever writing, great acting and a haunting plot, as close to perfect as a movie can get.
