2019 Emmy Nominations: The Revelations And The Rejections

Couch potatoes, rejoice! The nominations for the 2019 Primetime Emmy Awards have just been revealed. As usual, there are some bombshells as well as some massive snubs in the list.

Check out the full list to see if your favourite small screen shows were embraced or rejected!

As predicted, cultural behemoth Game of Thrones topped the list this year with a record-setting 32 Emmy nominations for its final season. This has brought cable channel HBO back as the dominant power with 137 nominations in total across all categories. Streaming service Netflix, which had more nominees than HBO in 2018, falls just behind with 117 nominations for Russian Doll, Bodyguard, Orange Is the New Black, When They See Us, and more.

Game of Thrones is up for Outstanding Drama Series, which would be the fourth win for the fantasy series if all goes as expected on September 23. Additionally, fan favourites Kit Harrington and Emilia Clarke were also nominated for Lead Actor and Lead Actress in a Drama Series, while many other members of the GOT cast are represented in the supporting categories and will battle it out to win the coveted trophy.

The Surprises

In a surprise addition, Game of Thrones actress Lena Headey is up for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Drama Series. This is despite only appearing in four out of six episodes. And, as fans have noted, mainly drinking wine on her balcony. Jealous, much?

Other pleasant surprises include Schitt’s Creek gaining multiple nods for its final season on the air. Jodie Comer gained a well-deserved nomination for Killing Eve. In addition, the list includes five nominations in total for cult-favourite Fleabag.

Similarly, almost every cast member of the HBO series Barry was nominated, including Bill Hader, Stephen Root, Anthony Carrigan, Henry Winkler, and Sarah Goldberg.

In a refreshing turn of events, LGBTQIA+ talent has been widely recognised, with nominations for Billy Porter for Pose, Hannah Gadsby for her comedy special Nanette, Laverne Cox for Orange Is The New Black and a nom for Rupaul’s Drag Race.

The Snubbs

But it wasn’t all welcome revelations in the list. Both George Clooney and Julia Roberts, despite being A-list industry heavyweights, were snubbed for their high-profile returns to the small-screen in Catch-22 and Homecoming.

In the late night category, NBC’s Seth Meyers, who was expected to score a nomination, did not.

Moreover, The Big Bang Theory was completely snubbed for its final season across all categories, in an upset for fans. Jim Carrey and Emma Stone were two other surprising rejects from the list, as well as Sarah Paulson who was shockingly omitted for her work in American Horror Story: Apocalypse.

The Forgotten?

The most recent seasons of Stranger Things, The Handmaid’s Tale and Big Little Lies have not been represented in the nominations, but fear not! They will be eligible for noms in next year’s list.

The 71st Primetime Emmy Awards takes place on Monday September 23rd (Australian time).
