Sydney rock band Bad Pony have unleashed a deliciously heavy booting and tooting track titled ‘Villain’.
Dark Pony have spent much of 2019 writing new material, and with ‘Villain’ as their first fresh release, the band is ready to rock audiences in 2020.
The song is a dark blend of glam rock and nihilism. Listeners will be knocked back by the song’s intensity which carries heavy guitars and drums. First fifteen seconds in, followed by a haunting screaming vocal the intro ‘synthy’ guitar riff sounds like a more ‘amped’ up version of the Duck Sauce hit ‘Barbara Streisand’ and already the song makes you want to riot in a pulverising, sweaty dance jive.
On The Recording Process
‘Villian’ took place in Pokolbin in regional NSW. The production was carried out by the band before being sent to Studios 301 in Sydney for mastering with renowned master engineer Leon Zervos who has engineered fellow Aussie acts such as INXS, Midnight Oil, The Jungle Giants, and Amy Shark.
Jarred Young, singer, and the sole songwriter behind this song explains ‘Villian’ was inspired by the darkness of his inner struggles living in Melbourne.
“‘Villain’ is an existentialist walk down Grey St. in St.Kilda. It’s a street renowned for night walkers, homelessness and drugs. I used to go through there at 5:30am in the morning every day to get to work and encountered people with some pretty serious drug and mental health problems. The song is about those people who are too often wrongly villainised,” said Young.
Young delves into this existentialist subject matter about homelessness and drug use as demonstrated in the lyric – ‘yeah we all gotta die sometime’. The line hits you introspectively into Young’s mind that captures his perspective as an outsider in Melbourne and the perspective of the inhabitants he personally encountered.
Singer Jarred Young told the AU Review exclusively:
“Creating villain has been such a fun process. The tune is about judgment, existential apathy and some pretty confronting characters I would come across whilst living in St Kilda last year. The themes are quite grim but we approached the production for it like an 80s horror-themed musical. We took the darkness and covered it in sonic glitter.”
The characteristics of Young’s personal experience puts a well grounded intensity in the song. Fans of T-Rex, Queen, and English band Royal Blood will be appreciative to the glam heaviness that this rock band delivers.
