If you’re looking for your next buy during an iso-online-shopping spree and have a cheeky $10 million to spare, why not consider buying a soul? Grimes’ soul, to be precise.
The artist and new mother has been the cause of some wacky headlines throughout her career, most recently for the name of her child with Elon Musk (does anyone know how to pronounce ‘X Æ A-Xii’ yet??). However, her recent decision to auction off a fraction of her soul to the highest bidder has got us scratching our heads.
The stunt comes as a new conceptual art piece as a part of her first ever fine art show hosted at Gallery Platform LA and Maccarone LA, tactfully titled ‘Selling Out’. This showcase displays notebook drawings, digital art prints, and of course; a fraction of her soul.
According to Bloomberg, Grimes initially started the bidding at $10 million USD (approx. $15 million AUD). The lucky winner will receive a contract outlining ownership of the soul as a satire on authenticity culture.
The best part? Grimes doesn’t actually want you to buy her soul.
“I didn’t want anyone to buy it, so I said we should just make it $10 million and then it probably won’t sell,” she told Bloomberg.
Given the global recessions threatened by Covid-19, Grimes graciously reconsidered the steep price and listed the price as ‘best offer’.
If you’re like Grimes and are questioning who would own that kind of money and WILLINGLY spend it on purchasing someone else’s soul, I beg you to Google Elon Musk’s net worth. Push present perhaps, Elon?
Interestingly, this has created a conversation about the value of one’s soul and the belief in it. What does it actually mean to own another human’s soul? Do you have some sort of ownership over them in another life? Or were you just suckered into purchasing super expensive piece of paper with a celebrity’s signature on it?
If Disney taught us anything, it’s to NEVER sell your soul to an evil (but fabulously purple) underwater octopus-lady because chances are, it’s probably going to cost you a lot more to get it back then it did to bargain it away.
So I guess…be careful Grimes?
