Virtual events are the norm in the pandemic-ridden world of 2020, so it’s no surprise that the Emmy Awards decided to hold a largely virtual event for the highly anticipated ceremony.
Some changes to the show’s format were expected, and while we won’t be able to tally up a ‘Best Matching Mask and Outfit’ list- we’re just glad we get a little bit of Hollywood back during these tumultuous times.
“You can’t have a virus without a host,” said Emmy Award Show host Jimmy Kimmel as he presided over a mostly virtual, socially-distanced audience. Audiences from around the world were able to tune into the Emmy’s as they were being streamed lived from the Staple Centre. The enormity of the Staple Centre allowed for numerous wiring connections in and out, which meant that nominees could beam in from the comfort of their home.
The highlights included:
- ‘Shitt’s Creek’ broke a record with seven Primetime awards and nine Emmys in total in the comedy categories.
- Zendaya also made history by becoming the youngest winner for best lead actress in a drama for her role as ‘Rue’ in Euphoria: a win that was celebrated overwhelmingly on social media.
- Billy Porter, Lin-Manual Miranda, and others called on Hollywood to become more inclusive with ‘more than a splash of colour on your white canvas.”
- The awkward laughter that typically follows cringey banter fell flat, considering Kimmel’s social distancing jokes were told to an almost entirely empty arena.
- There were countless essential-worker tributes.
- H.E.R performed an incendiary cover of ‘Nothing Compares 2 U’ for the In Memoriam tribute.
- And Sterling K.Brown presented the award for best drama with a clumsy bit ‘un-thanking’ the major players of 2020. “Un-thank you to the virus for keeping us all apart this year. Un-thank you to President Trump for his crummy and uncoordinated response. Un-thank you to Boris Johnson and his government for doing the same in my country..” he said.
At the end of the day, the Emmys did what we’re all attempting to do during this pandemic: the best it could.
