Post Malone is a prominent artist in the modern hip-hop scene. He recently received a Grammy nomination (alongside Swae Lee) in 2020 for their hit song ‘Sunflower’. This success was repeated again in 2021 when he was nominated for his own composition ‘Circles’.

We’re all familiar with pop princess, Katy Perry. The 5-time American Music Award winning pop star has a career spanning more than 10 years under her belt. Known for her whimsical, fantasy-themed music videos, she has performed at large scale events including the 61stAnnual Grammy awards. And most recently, the 2021 Biden-Harris inauguration.

Internationally recognised anime and gaming franchise, Pokémon, has developed a plethora of merchandise, including trading cards, plushies and stationary. With a variety of mobile apps, 8 generations of games, and a long-running television series under its belt, Pokémon is iconic in its own right.

So, what do these three have in common?

To celebrate its 25thanniversary this February 27, Pokémon will be partnering with American corporation ‘Universal Music Group’ to create ‘P25 Music’. As part of the festivities, Katy Perry will be part of a line-up of artists involved in creating musical content for the fans of the franchise to enjoy.

Additionally, one such event will see Post Malone featured as one of the acts in a virtual concert.

A video on the official Pokémon YouTube channel and Twitter account confirmed this, marketing it as “the concert you never saw coming”.

The polarizing artist generated quite a mixed reaction from the community with one fan stating:

“I sure didn’t. And never wanted to see for that matter. How about some ACTUAL Pokémon news on the Pokémon day? I know we will get them but at least give us a reason to be hyped for it.”

Whilst another wrote:

“POST MALONE IS MY FAVORITE MUSICIAN POKEMON IS MY FAVORITE SERIES!!! POSTY-MON!!!!!!!!!”

Pokémon collaborating with artists is familiar territory for the franchise. The premiere of their first film back in 1998 saw them working with acts that were big in the European market.

In 2021 Pokémon promises more musical acts will partner with the franchise and appear on their new website. In addition, Pokémon will be creating new merchandise and promotions by working together with industry craftsmen and other brands. Such collabs include General Mills, Levi’s, McDonalds, Jazwares, Scholastic, Mattel, Funko, and The Wand Company.

The Pokémon Day Virtual Concert is set to take place at 7PM Eastern Time/4 PM Pacific Time on Saturday the 27thof February (or 10 AM on Sunday the 28thof February for Australian fans). Check it out on 25.pokemon.com as well as on the official Pokémon YouTube and Twitch channels.
