Creative director Sarah Burton has delivered a McQueen collection for pre-fall 2021 that revels in hybrid transformations.
Since Alexander McQueen’s untimely death in 2010, assistant-turned-creative director Sarah Burton has not failed to imbue each collection with the founder’s distinct style. And this pre-fall 2021 collection is no exception to the rule.
No doubt a nod to McQueen’s own hybrid nature as an Englishman with proud Scottish roots, the pieces in this collection create drama through fusion. We have parkas crossed with evening gowns, denim effortlessly plugged into classic tuxedo jackets. These unlikely marriages of style and texture are countered by a staunch reliance on symmetry. Paired with chunky boots, the collection never strays too far into anything decidedly feminine or masculine, but instead rests between. While dresses abound, there remains the unmistakable influence of menswear.
And as should be expected, the silhouettes are unapologetically powerful. Notably, the dresses in striking greens, reds and royal purples are constructed in polyfaille. This ribbed, crosswire fabric is a sustainable polyester that can hold intriguing shapes.
