Since taking a digital sabbatical for two prior seasons, New York Fashion Week makes a comeback this September. The upcoming event is not only a return but a total regeneration. After a years-long battle to keep major names in play, some of the city’s biggest stars from Altuzarra to Telfar commit to presentations in New York until 2022.
The Council of Fashion Designers of America (CFDA) and IMG appear to have utilised their recent time off to establish a partnership. More than just an administrative update, together, they are reshaping the framework of NYFW to safeguard New York’s worldwide fashion reputation.
“New York Fashion Week is back with a diverse lineup representative of the future of American fashion,” said Steven Kolb, the CEO of CFDA. “Our fashion industry has come together as we continue to emerge from the pandemic, and a collaborative spirit is paramount to the success of our creative talents.”

New York Fashion Week, previously known as the major event for American designers, has been slowly eroding. As of late, designers have favoured showing their collections abroad or outside of the official calendar days, and this trend is worsening due to the pandemic. Travel constraints and other logistical issues have seen many American designers opt for short videos or other creative presentations in place of live displays. After two seasons of digital shows, the CFDA and IMG have recently released a preliminary NYFW schedule that runs from September 8 to September 12, 2021.
Return To The Capital
The brand new NYFW format includes an introduction of financial awards to entice US talent back to the fashion capital. Telfar, Proenza Schouler, Brandon Maxwell, Prabal Gurung, and LaQuan Smith are amongst members of the new IMG union.
Other returning designers include Thom Browne, who has been showing in Paris since 2017. Also featuring are Rodarte and Moschino, who are switching Los Angeles for New York. Peter Do and Dundas are making their New York debuts. Eckhaus Latta, Theophilio, Batsheva, Michael Kors and Coach also make a return to the event. The five-day presentation will conclude on September 12 by Tom Ford, who is assuming Marc Jacobs’ customary seat.
In America: A Lexicon of Fashion
The conclusion of this year’s augmented New York Fashion Week will coincide with the twice-postponed Met Gala. This year’s Met theme is “In America: A Lexicon of Fashion,” and CFDA chairman Tom Ford is hosting the event. The Met Gala is known as “fashion’s biggest night out,” acting as a fundraising event for the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City. The event attracts celebrities, young creatives, and industry titans.
The American Collections Calendar
Ford is already making significant changes to NYFW. He is rebranding the New York Fashion Week Calendar the “American Collections Calendar”. This includes all American designers who exhibit off-schedule and overseas inside a single coherent digital portal. Though the NYFW programme expects to change in the weeks leading up to the event, the NYFW schedule currently includes 91 shows and presentations. It begins with Ulla Johnson and finishes with Tom Ford. The event runs from September 8 – September 12 2021.
