The anticipated film is bringing back some fan favourites 18 years after its last instalment. It arrives at cinemas on December 22nd.
Information about The Matrix 4 has finally been revealed despite the film hitting theatres in only a few months. Leaks and rumours had been spreading until the trailer for The Matrix: Resurrections was shown at CinemaCon on August 24.Â
The film features some of the previous cast with Keanu Reeves and Carrie-Anne Moss reprising their roles as Neo and Trinity. Other returners include Jada Pinkett Smith as Niobe, Lambert Wilson as The Merovingian, and Daniel Bernhardt as Agent Johnson.Â
The trailer also reveals newcomers to the franchise. Neil Patrick Harris appears to be playing Neo’s therapist. Another new addition to the cast is Aquaman star Yahya Abdul-Mateen II who has rumours regarding a young Morpheus.
The Trailer
It seems when we meet him again, Neo has gone back to being Thomas Anderson and has been taking prescription blue pills. Neo then runs into Trinity in a cafe, but it’s not immediately clear if she recognizes him or not. Yahya Abdul-Mateen’s “younger Morpheus” also appears. He offers Neo a red pill, much like the first Matrix film, and tells him it’s “time to fly.” A direct homage to the original Matrix is Jefferson Airplane’s 1967 song “White Rabbit.” The song plays, over a scene showing blue pills spilling down a sink drain.
The trailer then packs some classic Matrix choreography, along with some more philosophical scenes, like Neo appearing to change into an old man as he looks in the mirror.
Included alongside the trailer was a small making-of video featuring interviews with Reeves and Moss. Reeves reminisces an interaction with a fan who said “The Matrix changed my life.” He says in response “Thank you, it changed mine too.”
The film’s direction is being led by the original trilogy director Lana Wachowski. She also co-wrote the screenplay along with The Lazarus Project author Aleksandar Hemon and Cloud Atlas author David Mitchell. With writers like mentioned, the film’s narrative is on track to be quite dense.
The Choice is Yours
Additionally, a mysterious website has surfaced, allowing you to choose either a red pill or a blue pill. The choice unlocks a teaser trailer. Entertainment Weekly reports that there are over 180,000 different glimpses of the upcoming movie. Check it out, here, if you dare.
