The Ingenuity of the Househusband has released its first season. Here are our thoughts.
The Ingenuity of the Househusband is a cosy view into the domestic life of Tsuda Kenjiro. Following the release of the second half of the anime The Way of the Househusband, the short slice-of-life series featuring Tsuda, Tatsu’s voice actor, was soon released. The episodes don’t go any longer than 6 minutes and has an unexpected focus on completing housework. Nonetheless, the show itself is still very popular. The series provides an unexpectedly quaint view into the satisfaction of completing housework.

Alongside completing everyday chores, the show also provides a unique view into Japanese cultural nuances. From fixing paper screen (shoji) doors, to making udon noodles, the show expertly portrays a unique view into Japanese living. Episode five, in particular, shows the regularly complained about recycling system. It explains it so easy that when you find yourself in Japan, you could learn a thing or two about navigating this system.
The nostalgic cinematography of the show is made so much better with the combined narration of Tsuda. His voice is highly revered within the Japanese acting community, most recently for his roles as Tatsu, “The Immortal Dragon”, (The Way of the Househusband) and Nanami Kento (Jujutsu Kaisen). Giving a step-by-step guide to his process, his voice provides calm in the (subdued) chaos. His quiet acceptance of when things go wrong also give an unexpected air of positivity, giving the show a relaxing vibe.
While this show may not be for everybody, it is an unexpectedly perfect way to relax after a long day. It can be finished in well under an hour, keeping you in the moment and relaxing you like nothing else.
