Is the Guardians of the Galaxy actor a misogynist?
Actor Chris Pratt has received an influx of criticism following a controversial Instagram post he made earlier this month. What was intended as a tribute to his wife, Katherine Schwarzenegger, has resulted in widespread negative attention for the actor best known for his role in Guardians of the Galaxy.
The Comments in Question
The post referred to his wife as having a “pure heart” and praising her for providing them with a “healthy daughter”.
“She helps me with everything. In return, periodically, I open a jar of pickles. That’s the trade”.
She is “my greatest treasure right next to my Ken Griffey Jr Upper Deck Rookie card”.
The Issues
There were a couple of reasons why this post sparked criticism. Some say that Pratt’s comment on Schwarzenegger providing him with a “healthy daughter” was a reference to his son Jack from his previous marriage to Anna Faris. Jack, now 9 years old, required several surgeries as a result of being born two months premature. Farris has spoken openly about their son’s health issues in the past. Whilst it can be argued that Pratt made no comparison between his two children, it can also be seen as incredibly insensitive.
People also felt Pratt was being misogynistic in the way he was describing his wife. Throughout the content, Pratt stated that Schwarzenegger “belonged” to him. He stated she does everything for him, returning the favour by occasionally opening “a jar of pickles” for her. Later he said his wife was his greatest treasure next to his “Ken Griffey Jr Upper Deck Rookie card” which has been construed as claiming ownership over Schwarzenegger.
Since the backlash, Pratt has spoken up, saying he has been “feeling down”.
“I went to bed really kind of upset and depressed and I woke up feeling crappy and I didn’t want to work out. I didn’t want to,” he said.
His wife hasn’t publicly responded yet, although her mother left a comment on Pratts’s tribute. She commended him on his role as a husband, father and son. “I want to remind you today what a good man you are,” she wrote on the post.
