March 2015 marks the 50th anniversary of The Sound of Music. It was the film that saved 20th Century Fox from bankruptcy and many doubted its success before its release. Even after all these years, the musical is still alive, being a significant part of pop culture today. Last week, at the Oscars, Lady Gaga paid tribute by singing the famous songs and was rewarded with a touching embrace from Julie Andrews, the star of the film herself. It was one of the award show’s highlights as no one expected that the two would meet or share a moment. Nor Lady Gaga delivering an elegant performance, crossing boundaries.

It isn’t just the songs that captured people’s hearts or the picturesque setting but also the lessons that The Sound of Music teaches. Basically breaking conformity. And that’s why it’s still relevant today, especially to the younger generation. Julie Andrews said that the film’s popularity is due to “the glorious music, that full symphony orchestra, the fact that it’s about family and love, and adventure as well.”

The seriousness of the situation in the film might be sugarcoated but the moral message is there and emphasised through the songs. Love it or hate it, The Sound of Music isn’t going anywhere anytime soon.
