The Most Anticipated Films of 2016

Anticipation is in the air for the new films set to hit our movie screens. From Deadpool, Finding Dory to the new Independence Day, 2016 promises to be a lucrative and exciting year for cinema.

Deadpool
After a five year delay, the long awaited Wade Wilson will soon be hitting our screens. It is a project surrounded by mystery and has us all guessing, from Deadpools origins to the intriguing R rating. Just what new ground will this movie break for Marvel? Release date February 12.

Warcraft
When I was younger I used to play the real time strategy game. Now that they have made a film I cannot help but wonder if it will be any good. Many successful films have been adapted from books; which makes me ask, can a successful film be adapted from a game? Yet scenes from the trailer have given me fond memories from my childhood. Effort has been made here. Release date June 10.

Fifty Shades of Black
Is it getting hot in here? No probably not. It does not take a genius to know this is a parody of the original Fifty Shades of Grey. Expect a high amount of sexual comedy. Release Date Janurary 29.

Finding Dory
It has been 13 years since Pixar brought us Finding Nemo. 2012 brought news of a sequel and now at long last the release date of finding dory is scheduled for this year. With Ellen DeGeneres and Albert Brooks reprising the roles of Dory and Marlin respectively and a host of exciting newcomers like Diane Keaton and Ty Burrell, this film promises plenty. Release date June 17.

Ten Cloverfield Lane
There was no way this movie was going to stay off the list. After the success of Cloverfield, good things are expected here. The trailer itself sparked controversy after its release with people asking whether this was in fact a sequel to the first film. Through subtle clues given in the trailer it is quite easy to connect this film to the first as an indirect follow-up with brand new characters. Given the small scope of the story being set within a bunker, can this film live up to the hype of its huge predecessor? Release date March 11.

Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice
Over the years many have speculated ‘who would win in a fight, batman or superman?” It is an old debate which has seen no conclusion…until now. Warner Bros have decided to put the question to bed at long last. Yet despite the title I sense an overarching plot beneath the surface, if it were just two hours of superman and batman brawling it would not make the screens. No, I smell a proper antagonist; Lex Luthor is plotting something behind the scenes. Release date March 25.

X Men Apocalypse
Another superhero flick these are getting tiring, at least its X Men. Apocalypse is set to conclude the trilogy beginning with X-Men First Class from 2011. The film is set to introduce the character Apocalypse, one of the series most iconic villains as he embarks on a mission to remake the world by killing everyone in it. Nothing cliché there, and of course it is up to Charles Xavier and his X-Men to stop him. At first glance the film does not seem to break new ground, but X-Men fans will get a kick out of seeing their favourite heroes on the big screen. Release date May 27.

Independence Day: Resurgence
Nemo and Cloverfield are not the only ones returning to the screens after a long respite. The aliens are back and this time they’re angry. In the twenty years that have passed the humans have incorporated alien tech into their society but when the aliens return it is clear they’ve been busy too. Save for Will Smith (Where is he by the way) the 1996 cast is mostly intact. Featuring Jeff Goldblum and Bill Pullman reprising their roles, we are also introduced to a new lead in Liam Hemsworth who plays Jake Morrison. After the action packed first film I can only imagine what to expect in a sequel. (Where is Will Smith?) Release date June 24.

Captain America: Civil War
Another super hero movie? ‘Insert sigh here’ we’re getting flooded with them. Similar to Superman and Batman this film will serve to propagate the ‘who would win’ scenario common to the superhero genre by pitting Captain America and Iron Man against each other. I seriously hope this stops before it becomes a trend in cinema. The two heroes will fight and then reluctantly band together to face a great evil. Of course that is just an educated guess based off my experiences with super hero movies. Maybe it is a jewel in disguise but my hopes are not high. Release date May 6th.

Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them
J.K Rowling makes a new mark on the world of Harry Potter with this exciting new prequel about a magizoologist played by Eddie Redmayne who accidentally releases a variety of dangerous creatures he was keeping in his briefcase. This film marks the debut of Rowling’s Screenwriting career. Yet with a release date of November 18, we will be waiting a while.

Zoolander 2

This year is inspiring the release of sequels to franchises decades old and now at long last Zoolander makes a return with the aptly named Zoolander 2. Ben Stiller reprises his role as the flamboyant male model Derek Zoolander as he is recruited to solve a conspiracy plot when people start dying whilst wearing Zoolander’s iconic blue steel look on their faces. Owen Wilson and Will Ferrell also make a return as Hansel and Mugatu respectively. New additions to the cast include Penelope Cruz, Kristen Wiig and even Benedict Cumberbatch. The film is scheduled for release on the 11th of February.
